    Privacy Policy

    The short version

    We collect only what we need to run our sites, deliver what you asked for and support you. We don't sell your data, we don't use it for advertising, and we don't use analytics or tracking cookies. You can ask us to see, correct or delete your information at any time.

    1. Who we are

    Mobterest Studio Ltd, a company registered in Kenya ("Mobterest Studio", "we", "us"), is responsible for the personal information described here. This policy covers:

    • our website, mobterest.studio;
    • Engineering Residency, at er.mobterest.studio;
    • the Builder Pipeline, at pipeline.mobterest.studio, and the products you can trial there;
    • our waitlists and free resources, such as the Vennie waitlist;
    • calls, consulting and client work, and the emails we exchange with you.

    Our apps, such as Vennie, may have their own privacy policy. Where they do, that policy applies to the app itself.

    2. What we collect

    When you join a waitlist or ask for a free resource: your email address, your name if you give it, which list or resource it was, and any choices on that form, for example whether you'd like to test the Vennie beta.

    When you request access to a Builder Pipeline product: your email address, your name if you give it, and which product you asked about. If you then trial the product, whatever you enter into it is stored so the product works during your trial. Please use test data, not real customer data, while trialling.

    When you sign in to Engineering Residency with Google or GitHub: your email address, your profile picture and an ID that links your account to that provider. We never receive your Google or GitHub password. We also keep anything you add to your profile (all optional: name, title, country and bio) and your learning activity: lessons completed, points, bookmarks, quiz and recall-check progress, and the capstone projects you submit with our reviews of them.

    When you buy something, such as a course, the Membership, a digital product or a call: Gumroad handles the payment. We receive your email address, what you bought and the license key or subscription details needed to give you access. We never see your card or bank details.

    When you book a call or work with us: your name, email, and the business or project details you choose to share so we can prepare and do the work.

    When you email us: your message and whatever you include in it.

    Technical information: our servers record basic request details, such as IP address, browser type and the page requested, to keep the service running and secure. These logs are deleted automatically after 14 days.

    3. How we use it

    • to send the resources, waitlist updates and invites you signed up for;
    • to sign you in to Engineering Residency and keep you signed in;
    • to give you access to what you bought or subscribed to, and check license keys with Gumroad;
    • to track your learning progress, award points and review the capstones you submit;
    • to set up and support Builder Pipeline trials you request;
    • to prepare for calls and deliver client work;
    • to answer your messages and send emails about your account or purchases;
    • to prevent abuse and spam, and keep our services secure.

    We don't sell your personal information, share it for advertising, or use it to build profiles about you. We only email you about what you signed up for or bought, and you can stop those emails at any time by replying to one or writing to us.

    4. Our legal basis

    Under Kenya's Data Protection Act, 2019, and similar laws such as the GDPR, we rely on:

    • Your consent, for waitlists and free resources. You can withdraw it at any time.
    • Providing what you asked for (a contract), for accounts, purchases, trials, calls and client work.
    • Legitimate interests, for security, preventing abuse and answering your messages.
    • Legal obligations, for example keeping business and tax records.

    5. Who we share it with

    We share only what each service needs to do its job. These are services you'll see or use directly:

    • Google and GitHub: sign you in to Engineering Residency.
    • Gumroad: processes payments and subscriptions, and confirms license keys.
    • YouTube (Google): plays the videos embedded on our sites.
    • DartPad (Google): runs the in-browser code editor in some lessons.
    • Google Play: if you sign up to test a beta, such as Vennie, we add your email to the app's test list so Google can let you in.

    We also use service providers that work behind the scenes on our behalf: a hosting provider that runs our servers and databases, an email provider that delivers the emails we send you, and a video provider that streams lesson videos and collects basic playback data, such as buffering and device type. They may only use your information to provide those services to us.

    Each of these handles your information under its own privacy policy. We may also disclose information if the law requires it, or to protect our users or services from fraud or abuse. If Mobterest Studio is ever sold or merged, your information would move with it under this policy, and we'd tell you first.

    6. Cookies and storage

    • Session cookie (Engineering Residency only): keeps you signed in for up to 30 days. It's essential, can't be read by scripts on the page, and isn't used for tracking.
    • Theme preference: remembers light or dark mode in your browser's storage.
    • Embedded content: YouTube, our video provider and DartPad may set their own cookies when you play a video or open a code editor.

    We don't use analytics, advertising or cross-site tracking cookies.

    7. How long we keep it

    • Waitlist and resource sign-ups: until you ask us to remove you, or the list is closed.
    • Engineering Residency accounts, profiles, progress and submissions: until you delete your account.
    • Builder Pipeline requests and trial data: for as long as needed to run and follow up on the trial.
    • Client work and correspondence: for the length of the work and as long as needed for records afterwards.
    • Purchase and business records: as long as the law requires.
    • Server logs: 14 days, then deleted automatically.
    • Database backups: up to 8 weeks, so deleted information may remain in a backup for that long before it's gone for good.

    8. Your rights

    You can ask us to:

    • tell you what information we hold about you, and give you a copy;
    • correct anything that's wrong;
    • delete your information, or remove you from a list;
    • stop or limit how we use it, or object to a particular use.

    Email mobterest@gmail.com and we'll reply within 30 days. Engineering Residency learners can also edit their profile in Settings → Profile and delete their account in Settings → Account & security. Cancel an active Membership on Gumroad first so you aren't billed again.

    If you're unhappy with how we've handled your information, you can complain to Kenya's Office of the Data Protection Commissioner, or to the data protection authority where you live.

    9. Security

    All connections to our sites are encrypted, access to our systems and admin areas is limited and checked on every request, and we don't keep data we don't need. No system is perfectly secure, but we work hard to protect your information and will tell you promptly if a breach affects you.

    10. Children

    Our services are meant for people aged 18 and over, or younger people using them with a parent or guardian's consent. If you believe a child has given us their information without that consent, contact us and we'll delete it.

    11. International transfers

    The services listed above may store and process information outside Kenya, including in the United States. Where the law requires it, we rely on appropriate safeguards for those transfers.

    12. Changes to this policy

    As Mobterest Studio grows, this policy may change. We'll always update the date at the top, and if we change how we handle your information in a meaningful way, we'll tell you by email or with a notice on our sites before the change takes effect.
